Mission Point

Important update for Chianti: due to record low national unemployment and a lack of H2B visas which allow for temporary workers from other countries to work, thousands of businesses around the United States do not have enough staff. Northern Michigan, Mackinac Island and Mission Point have been impacted.

At this time, we simply do not have enough staff to open Chianti. Please accept our sincere apologies. We are as saddened as you not to be able to serve you in Chianti at this time.

We welcome you to dine at Bistro on the Greens and Round Island Bar & Grill, where Chef Matt Nelson and his team have created a host of delicious new items for the 2019 season!

Hi everyone, We anticipated that this post would spark some conversations and debates about hiring here in northern Michigan. Should you know someone seeking seasonal work on Mackinac Island, we have many positions open and are always accepting applications at www.missionpoint.com/careers. We are looking forward to a wonderful 2019 season!

For those who don't get it, Con Don prescribes to a particular theory cultivated by the Klan in the 20s that says if you can eliminate immigration and prevent the government from assisting with poverty the existant minority population will be forced to take this kind of work regardless of circumstances or wage and the remittances would get sent back to Detroit instead of Guatemala or Jamaica. That's why his new immigration plan is skills based, not gonna see many Doctors cleaning rooms. I know some folks have been asleep for a while, it's time to wake up now...

First of all, everyone needs to understand not every job deserves a “living wage”. Just because you are doing some kind of labor does not guarantee a certain level of income. Could be because supply and demand or just because it’s not worth the expense. To do otherwise is welfare, a handout- socialism... The bigger issue is the younger generation- millennials or whatever you want to call them for the most part don’t have the work ethic to even think they need to work. Given participation trophies and safe spaces they have no clue what the real world is like. Of course there are exceptions, but in some of latest surveys the majority of them prefer socialism over capitalism... It’s not the kids fault they weren’t born that way, parenting or lack of it and liberal schooling are to blame.

It is so funny to read the comments from the people who have no idea what they are talking about regarding this topic! Please do some research before you comment “hire Americans” or “pay a decent wage”.

I still have dreams about my time there 25 years later

Why not higher US citizens?

Please.. Everybody that is making these comments, know what you are talking about..

Pay them more and hire local

This is so sad as this is such an amazing place to work and friends to be made for life. This is a great opportunity for younger American college students as the money to be made is 👌🏻 this restaurant is fab. I understand the unattractiveness of seasonal work for American citizens but for college students it would be perfect! Hope this restaurant can open soon. Thanks for the memories MPR!

Pay a little more & employees from other places will come work for you.

I loved working at Mission Point whilst at University!! The money was secondary to the brilliant people and experience I had there. We pay a lot of money for flights and visas ....but US students...for some of you it's on your doorstep!...Go experience a summer there and make brilliant memories!

Where are all the high school or college kids that need a summer job?

There are homeless people in Goshen, Indiana that want jobs but do not have a place to live! Hit up the mayor of Goshen! This may help them get the start they need...especially if you provide lodging!

I understand the difficulty in the Visa process. In some ways, HR departments have gotten to used to being able to utilize those resources that they have forgotten how to properly recruit. In Mission Point's case the Chianti should be open Friday and Saturday nights and Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. The Round Island should be open for lunch and the bar in the evenings. The golf course for lunch and the bar at night. Lastly, call your legislators. They are the ones that have let you down. The Republican Senate and House in Lansing is clearly to blame.

In the old days in 1979 people worked their way through college. I had many friends who worked at your hotel and the other island business including me. Back then there was no such thing as foreign workers on the island except for the Grand Hotel.

I'd love to work back at mission point I had a great 4 years there hire me back

I wonder how many people who have commented above have ever worked or still work in hospitality? I was an intern who worked at Mission point and I loved it there so much that I went back for 2 more years and worked as a manager in both restaurants! I learned so much and met so many awesome people from all over the world! My degree from college was not in hospitality but I learned so much that my career took a different path and I stayed in that field! This is not just a Mackinac island problem, it's the whole US problem! All service oriented industries are having a problem finding help! For those who say pay more!!!! We all pay way more than you think and still can't get enough people interested! I agree with those who say that service and skill trade jobs are becoming a thing of the past because everyone wants to go to college and get more prestigious jobs! Most people look down their nose at those who work those jobs! Heck I have a college degree and love my job but can't tell you how often I'm talked down to because people assume that since I'm in customer service.. then I'm an idiot! Bottom line all those international students, Jamaican staff and others who came to work on Mackinac helped make it a special place! I hope they lift the ban and give them the opportunity to experience what we all did years ago!

First off.....this is SEASONAL work. Second....it's experience work. Third....this is the BEST place I ever worked. The only time I had commas in my paychecks. And if I could do it for a living I would. In a heart beat. It's not meant to give you lifetime employment. But I'm sure you could if you did what they did when I worked there. Workthe island in the summer....go work in Florida for the summer. You'd have to pay for your own insurance...live in dorm style rooms. Make your own travel arrangements. Sure. But....THE EXPERIENCE IS WORTH IT! I remember the island every single day of my life. Made life long friends from around the world. And don't regret any of it.

Job fair/recruitment for hospitality interns?

As much money that is spent on the island, if a living wage is offered, I'm sure that staff can be found. Hell, I'm 69 years old, offer me a job. I can't get anyone to hire me here at home because of my age. Around here, they don't want to pay for experience.

Why can’t the Jamaicans get their visas?

The operative word is "work". Too many have been brainwashed into thinking they should all have a college degree and that doing work such as waiting tables, working in retail, manufacturing is beneath them. I raised 4 kids while working 2 and 3 jobs for a lot less than people would consider a "decent wage". No one says you have to do these jobs forever, but if you want to go out to eat, shop, travel, someone has to be there to provide these services. There is nothing wrong or demeaning about it. This country was not built by people sitting on their butts collecting a check from the government! Everyone can't be managers, there has to be "workers".

I am recalling now that times , years back when I was working in Miission point. We were complaining of not having enough working hours because there were so many employees and all of us were from different parts from around the world. 😊 first I was working in the main restaurant ( i forgot it's name) and then moved to Deli market place 💕💕💕. However, When the pick season hit, we were all doing overtime work with banquettes events. Such a great time , unforgettable moments. We also made friends for lifetime 💕

So... I grew up in that area. Yes, ALL of the businesses hire locals and yes ALL of the locals work. As a high school and college student, I worked 2-3 jobs every summer to support the tourism. My parents did too. Everyone who lives there work multiple jobs. Do you know what the population of that area is off-season? It’s a ghost town. Of course the locals cannot support this entire industry. They need to bring in others to help. If not? Goodbye to all Northern Michigan tourism. So much ignorance on this post. I hope they find some help.

Kicked to the curb,,yep,,don't try to be cool and smoke a joint with other employees,, they will NARC, and its bye, bye, still love,ya, Jimmy..
